I have something to ask you guys. What is a 'guy thing', and what is a 'girl thing'? Can you really split everything into something for guys and something for girls? It annoys me to no end that people say that certain things are meant for guys, and not for girls. I mean, sure, things like urinals and (male) condoms are for guys, whilst pads and tampons are for girls, but for general things such as careers and books, can you really split them into terms of gender?
I think it's unfair.
My dad was saying something about how engineering is more suited for boys, and not for girls, and I retaliated saying that I would go out into the field if I were interested in engineering. I might not know what many engineers do, but that doesn't mean that I can't go into engineering. As long as I have the qualifications, what does anyone have to complain about? As long as I know what I'm doing, and I know what your situation is and how to advise you on it, what is there to complain about?
Another time, a few months back, I mentioned to my piano teacher that I'd like to be a doctor. Yes, now about that.. I'm not becoming one anymore, because for one, I know that's not something I'd be able to get into, and secondly, I found something else I want to do that's in the medicinal field. But anyway, I said that I wanted to become a doctor, and she decided to tell me that a doctor isn't something a girl should do, and more of a career for boys. So she told me to do dentistry instead.
I hate dentistry.
Then I've told the same person I like to play soccer, and she told me that I shouldn't play because it's a rough sport. Then what should I be playing? Netball? Volleyball? How am I going to perform if I don't like the sport itself? Firstly, there's no 'I' in 'team', and I'm certainly not going to play in a team I don't like.
Books are sort of the same thing. I hear people go on about how Twilight is a chick's book, how Skulduggery Plesant is for teenage boys, ect ect. As someone who absolutely hates Twilight with a passion, and loves books like Skulduggery Plesant, Contest and The Rangers Apprentice it's a stupid concept. Action, thriller and horror books are not just for boys, and sappy romances, romantic comedy and those dramatic books are not just for girls. Hey, I completely rejected the Girls Rock! series and read the entire Boys Rules! series instead.
I mean, Emily Rodda writes completely awesome books, and they seem to be the typically male targeted books, but Deltora's Quest and Rowan of Rin are two series that I'd read over and over again.
So tell me, what do you consider to be typically boy things, and typically girl things?
