[M] The Handmaid's Tale
Friday, 27 July 2012 at 20:00

This is amazing. It's like, the second book I'm reading for lit, cover to cover, and it's the first text I've enjoyed just reading it. I mean, Scott F. Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby was a good book, I didn't mind it, but I sort of had to force myself to read it until the end. The Handmaid's Tale (by Margaret Atwood) is the first lit book I'm enjoying every page of.

It's confronting, yes, but it's actually a pretty good read! It's a dystopian, science and gothic fiction novel, published around 1985 and is set in the future, talking about a society completely and utterly ruled by religion, where a woman's only function is to either breed (become a handmaid), work in the kitchen, marry (if they can), or become a maid. Alongside being such a good read, it's a little confusing at times with their usage of speech marks, but it's okay, I mean, it doesn't bother me... much.

Oh, and this shows my maturity. LOL. This is how they describe a man's penis.
To have them putting him on, trying him on, trying him out, while he himself puts them on, like a sock over a foot, onto the stub of himself, his extra, sensitive thumb, his tentacle, his delicate stalked slug's eye, which extrudes, expands, winces, and shrivels back onto himself when touched wrongly, grows big again, bulging a little at the tip, travelling forward as if along a leaf, into them, avid for vision. (p. 98)
WHO THE HELL CALLS IT A 'SLUG'S EYE'? That doesn't sound right, at all, LMAO. The sex part (because Offred is a handmaid, her sole function is to breed) was.. funny too. I mean, who the hell holds your hand while you're getting fucked by someone else?! No less by that woman's husband! It's a scary reality, this one, and I really hope it doesn't become our society any time soon.

OUR WACE EXAM TIME TABLES CAME OUT TODAY TOO! Mine isn't too bad, it's pretty okay. My first one is on the first day, the day after my birthday, omg ;A; But I can't really complain, because one of my friends has one every day of the second week, so that's like, five exams over and done with in five days, but it's also so much stress. Oh God, someone save me ;A;

Hope you guys have an awesome weekend!
